AUBURN, Ala. - Auburn track & field freshman Israel Okon was named the Southeastern Conference’s Men’s Runner of the Week, as announced by the league office Tuesday.
It is the second SEC weekly honor for the Tigers this outdoor season and the first for Okon’s career.
Competing in his third meet of the outdoor season, the All-American delivered a pair of wins at the LSU Invitational in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Racing in the 100m, Okon blew through the competition, running a 9.91 (+2.9 m/s) in the 100m to take gold.
Delivering a personal best time on the Bernie Moore Track, Okon’s time is No. 2 in the nation and No. 1 in the SEC this season. He topped his previous best of 10.07 that he set earlier this season.
The indoor 60m bronze medalist went on to run the second leg of the men’s 4x100m relay. The quartet ran the fourth fastest time in the NCAA (38.49), standing sixth on Auburn’s all-time top 10 list.
In both races, Okon beat out fellow runners from the SEC as No. 12 Alabama, No. 9 Arkansas, No. 14 Florida, No. 5 Georgia, No. 20 Ole Miss and host No. 15 LSU appeared in the meet.
