Chierighini ties for 5th in 100 free at Worlds

Marcelo Chierighini tied for fifth in the finals of the 100m freestyle on Thursday at the FINA World Championships in Budapest.

Chierighini, who swam at Auburn from 2010-14, clocked a 22.95 50m split and finished in 48.11 to tie Duncan Scott of Great Britain. Caeleb Dressel of the United States won gold in 47.17, Nathan Adrian of the United States took silver in 47.87 and Mehdy Metella of France won bronze in 47.89.

Julie Meynen, who will be a sophomore this season, finished 29th in prelims of the women's 100m free, clocking a 55.99.

Hugo Gonzalez of Spain, who will be a freshman this season, finished 32nd in the 200m backstroke in 2:02.41.

Natasha Lloyd, who just completed her eligibility at Auburn, finished 25th in the 200m breaststroke in 2:33.93.

Cesar Cielo, the world record holder in the 50m free, will swim in heat 12 (of 13), lane 6, during Friday morning's prelims session of the event. His world record of 20.91 still stands from 2009.

Also swimming during Friday's prelims will be Santiago Grassi of Argentina (heat 6 of 8, lane 1) and Luis Martinez of Guatemala (heat 7, lane 8) in the 100m fly and Zane Grothe as part of the United States' 4x200 free relay.

The swimming competition is being be held at the Danube Arena.
