AUBURN, Ala. – Auburn sophomore forward Anfernee McLemore will continue his role as a member of the Southeastern Conference Men’s Basketball Leadership Council when it convenes at its annual meeting at SEC headquarters Friday and Saturday.
McLemore spent a weekend in July in Birmingham as the Student-Athlete Leadership Council met with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
“When you are 4.0 GPA and a 1670 SAT, you have a different kind of capability,” said Auburn head coach Bruce Pearl. “Anfernee comes from a military background so when you combine his aptitude with his discipline and his work ethic, he is focused and is going to compete on and off the court.
“Anfernee has been a guy who has led simply by example, and I would like him to be able to learn to utilize his gifts and talents by not only doing what I do but also getting to do what I say as a leader.”
Among the agenda items for the group is a conversation with Commissioner Greg Sankey followed by a review of NCAA and SEC legislative items related to basketball. The 28 student-athletes will also have an opportunity to engage with men’s and women’s basketball officials on rules of the game and student-athlete/referee interaction.
“I’m excited about the opportunity to represent Auburn in a way that respects our organization and our university,” said McLemore. “It gives me the ability to learn from some of the best leaders and players in the conference and share what I have learned with my teammates.”
Janiah McKay, a junior guard for the Auburn women’s team, is also a member of the Leadership Council. The council consists of one male representative and one female representative from each of the SEC’s 14 institutions.
Andy Katz, former ESPN College Basketball analyst, will meet with the men’s representatives to discuss careers in broadcasting and personal and professional image and branding.
Renee Brown, former WNBA Chief of Basketball Operations and Player Relations, will meet with the women’s representatives on the topics of careers in professional sports and WNBA preparedness.
The Men’s Basketball Leadership Council and the Women’s Basketball Leadership Council comprise two components of the SEC Student-Athlete Leadership Council. The third component is the Football Leadership Council. For the second consecutive year, the groups will gather in Atlanta the week of the SEC Football Championship Game in December for a career exploration tour.
