AUBURN RISING Auburn opened the 2013 season with three home games at Jordan-Hare Stadium. The 3-0 start was capped by a come-from-behind win in the SEC opener against Mississippi State: The Tigers were unable to overcome a 21-0 first-half deficit at No. 6 LSU but Auburn fought back in a driving rain in Baton Rouge before falling 35-21. Wins against Ole Miss and Western Carolina back at Jordan-Hare Stadium brought the Tigers' record to 5-1 at the halfway mark of the regular season. Auburn would crack the polls for the first time in the 2013 season, appearing at No. 24 in the AP Poll released before the team's trip to Texas. KYLE FIELD Auburn announced to the college football world the Tigers were back with a 45-41 upset win in College Station against returning Heisman winner Johnny Manziel and No. 7 Texas A&M: Auburn defensive end Dee Ford sealed the win with two sacks of Manziel on the Aggies' final drive, including the last sack off a blitz with 18 seconds to play. Auburn players and fans would celebrate at Kyle Field while fans back home in Auburn set off a wild celebration at Toomer's Corner. | HITTING THE ROAD Auburn vaulted to No. 11 after the win at A&M and moved up to No. 8 after beating FAU on October 26 at Jordan-Hare to improve to 7-1. The Tigers hit the road to Fayetteville and came away with a hard-fought 35-17 win before scoring the most points in the series with Tennessee in a 55-23 win at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville: THE CATCH No. 7 Auburn and No. 25 Georgia staged one of the most dramatic games in the Deep South's Oldest Rivalry on November 16. The series, first played in 1892, was deadlocked 54-54-8 prior to the game at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Leading 37-17 in the fourth quarter, Auburn watched its margin evaporate as the Bulldogs scored three touchdowns to go up 38-37 with 1:49 left in the game. Facing fourth down on his own 27 with 35 seconds left on the clock, QB Nick Marshall launched a pass downfield: Auburn receiver Ricardo Louis plucked the ball deflected by Georgia defenders from the air at the 15 and raced in for the score with 25 seconds on the clock. It would take a stand by the Auburn defense to finally subdue UGA but the Tigers clinched their 10th win of the season and set up a showdown with No. 1 Alabama for the SEC West. | EPIC IRON BOWL No. 1 Alabama rolled into Jordan-Hare riding a 16-game winning streak and consecutive national titles. But Auburn, ranked No. 4 at 10-1 on the season, was more than ready to trade blows with its archival in the 78th Iron Bowl. The Tigers pounded the ball for 296 yards on the ground against the Tide's vaunted defense, led by junior RB Tre Mason (164 yards and a touchdown). Auburn trailed 28-21 in the fourth quarter but Nick Marshall threw a touchdown pass to Sammie Coates with 32 seconds left to tie the game. Alabama got as close as the Tigers' 38-yard line and lined up for a 57-yard field goal with one second left: SEC CHAMPIONSHIP Auburn's 34-28 win against Alabama provided the Tigers a No. 3 ranking and a berth in the SEC title game in Atlanta against No. 5 Missouri. The Georgia Dome was painted orange and blue with Auburn fans roaring for their Tigers. Tre Mason piled up an SEC-record 306 yards and four touchdowns on Mizzou as Auburn broke a slew of records en route to a 59-42 win and the program's eighth SEC championship: |
