AUBURN SWIMMING AND DIVING TEAMS START SEASON WITH WINS AGAINST ALABAMA-November 17, 2000

Tuscaloosa, Ala.-Both the men's and women's swimming and diving teams for Auburn University beat Alabama tonight by winning nearly every event. The women's score was 186-112 while the men won 184.5-109.5.

On the women's side, the team was led by freshmen Magda Dyszkiewicz and Taylor Spivey and sophomore Cortnee Adams who each won two events. Dyszkiewicz won the 1000 yard free in a school record time of 9:43.30, beating the record set last year by teammate Maggie Bowen by over ten seconds. Dyszkiewicz also won the 500 free.

In both events, the Auburn women claimed the first four spots. Spivey won both the 100 and 200 backstroke and Adams won the 200 and 50 freestyle.

Individual winners for the women also included Laura Swander, who won the 100 breaststroke and Brook Monroe, who won the 200 breaststroke. Maggie Bowen won the 200 fly while sophomore transfer Suzie Flook won the 100 fly.

The women also won the 200 free relay. Freshman diver Ashley Rubenstein won the one-meter diving event while Halina Obremsky finished second in the three-meter diving.

"This was a solid meet, especially for the women. The frontline did extremely well for us tonight," said Head Coach David Marsh.

The men started out with wins in both the three-meter and one-meter diving by freshman Caesar Garcia. "Caesar really set us up and gave us hope for tonight," said Marsh.

Justin Caron and Jeff Somensatto led the way with two wins each. Caron won the 100 and 200 breast while Somensatto won the 100 and 200 fly. Jon Karr won the 100 back, Bryce Hunt won the 200 back, and Greg Busse won the 100 free.

Kevin Clements won the 200 IM and Eric vanGoethem just barely beat out teammate Gerrit Hillebrand to win the 50 free. The men won both relays.

"Alabama came ready to race and it showed. I'm sure they'll move up in the SEC standings with how they looked tonight," said Marsh. "We need to get a whole lot better. Our top swimmers are not where we want them to be at this point; we'll need to be a lot better at the U.S. Open."

The Auburn Swimming and Diving team will continue competition at the U.S. Open held at their home pool, the James E. Martin Aquatic Center in Auburn, Ala., Nov. 30-Dec. 2.
