Ty Evans, a former All-American at Wisconsin-Whitewater and 17-year collegiate coaching veteran, is in his ninth season on coach Terri Williams-Flournoy's staff at Auburn. He joined the Auburn staff prior to the 2012-13 season, and he was promoted to associate head coach following the 2015-16 season. He primarily coaches the point guards while assisting in recruiting.
Evans, a native of Beloit, Wis., is in his second stint under Williams-Flournoy. Prior to his tenure at Alabama, Evans spent two seasons (2005-07) under Williams-Flournoy at Georgetown. He left the Hoyas for a similar position at Alabama, where he stayed until moving to Auburn.
In his first season on The Plains, he helped guide the Tigers to 19 wins, the most in four years, and an appearance in the Women's NIT quarterfinals. Auburn set a school record with 402 steals during the 2012-13 season while forcing 701 turnovers, a mark that ranks second all-time on The Plains.
While mentoring point guard Najat Ouardad in his first season, he helped her improve from 2.7 assists per game to 5.7, a mark that ranked her second in the SEC and 26th in the country. She also improved to a 1.4 assist-to-turnover ratio as a senior after posting a negative ratio as a junior.
His fourth season saw the Tigers advance to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2009 and post a 20-13 overall record (8-8 SEC). Season five on The Plains saw Evans help lead Auburn to its second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and a 17-15 overall record, and season six in 2017-18 saw point guard Janiah McKay become Auburn's 33rd 1,000-point scorer. The 2018-19 season, Evans' seventh on The Plains, saw the Tigers make their third NCAA Tournament appearance in four years while posting a 22-10 overall record, 9-7 in SEC play - the best marks in a decade for the Tigers.
At Alabama, Evans coached the post players and helped his players earn All-SEC honors in three of his five seasons. He was also instrumental in coaching the Crimson Tide to a WNIT Sweet 16 appearance in 2011, the team's first post-season trip since 2002.
Also heavily involved in recruiting, Evans brought national attention to Alabama in 2010 and 2011 after securing top-20 recruiting classes both years. Prior to going to Alabama, Evans served two years at Georgetown under Williams-Flournoy. He assumed every role on the Hoya staff, including a brief stint as recruiting coordinator. During those two seasons, he was instrumental in the recruiting and re-building efforts that would eventually turn Georgetown into a perennial NCAA Tournament team.
He began his collegiate coaching career at Saint Louis University where he served as an assistant coach during the 2001-02 season. After a season coaching professionally overseas, Evans returned to Saint Louis as assistant coach during the 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons. He directed the Billikens' recruiting efforts during his time with the team and worked with the post players.
A 1995 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, Evans earned a degree in secondary education while serving as a co-captain on the basketball team for two seasons. He was a first team All-American for the Warhawks following the 1994-95 campaign. Evans garnered two-straight all-conference honors and led the Warhawks to the NCAA tournament twice. For his efforts, Evans was inducted into the Wisconsin-Whitewater Hall of Fame in 2010.
Evans spent the 1991 season at the University of Richmond before transferring to Wisconsin-Whitewater. That year, the Spiders won the Colonial Athletic Association Championship and went to the NCAA Tournament where, as a No. 15 seed, defeated No. 2 seed Syracuse in the First Round.
Evans had a professional career overseas, playing in Norway and Taiwan. In 1998, he won his team's Most Valuable Player award in Norway and was named to the All-Star Foreign Tour Team in 1996.
Evans, a 2012 member of the Beloit Historical Sports Hall of Fame, is married to the former Tina Perkins and has three children: Alexis, Matthew and Shylyn.
