AUBURN—Former Auburn All-American Chris Fox has been named Auburn’s cross country and distance coach, announced head track and field coach Ralph Spry on Thursday. A 1983 Auburn graduate, Fox comes to Auburn from Warfordsburg, Pa., where he was the distance coach at North Hagerstown High School for the last two years.
"We are excited to have Chris join our staff,” Spry said. “It makes it even more special that he is an Auburn alumnus. He has trained and competed at a world-class level so he knows what it takes, both as an athlete and as a coach, to compete and recruit at the college level."
Fox also served as the cross country coach at George Washington University (1994-95) and the cross country and distance coach at the University of North Carolina (1985-87), where he coached one NCAA individual champion and two individuals to four All-American honors.
"It's great to be coming back to Auburn,” Fox said. “I have wanted to return to Auburn for 15 years and now I’m getting that chance. I am really looking forward to working with the staff and especially the team."
Fox also competed professionally, running for Nike Athletics West (1987-1994) and Brooks Sports (1995-1998) and is a five-time Olympic Trials qualifier.
A six-time All-American at Auburn, Fox was a two-time All-American cross country runner and twice earned All-America honors indoors at two miles and outdoors at 5,000-meters.
The Auburn cross country season begins on Friday, Sept. 6 at the Moccasin Invitational in Chattanooga, Tenn
