Auburn Cross Country Athlete Charlie Spencer Passes Away

AUBURN—Charles ‘Charlie’ McGowin Spencer, a member of the Auburn cross country team and native of Mobile, Ala., passed away Tuesday in his hometown.
“We are deeply saddened to hear of the death of Charlie,” Auburn track and field coach Ralph Spry said. “He was one of our more popular athletes and was well liked by everyone. He will be deeply missed by the Auburn track family. We send our prayers and condolences to his family during this difficult time.”
He is the son of Lonn and Gayle Spencer of Mobile.
A junior at Auburn, Spencer joined the Auburn cross country team this season after transferring from Bevill State. Spencer was a member of the 2000 Bevill State National Champion cross country team and the 1998 Murphy High School 6A State Champion cross country squad.
Visitations will be held from the funeral home on Friday, November 29, from noon to 2 p.m. followed by funeral services in the chapel of the Radney Funeral Home. Interment will be in Pine Crest Cemetery. Memorials may be made to donor’s favorite charity.
