Auburn Women's Cross Country Picked to Finish Second

BIRMINGHAM - The Auburn women's cross country team was picked to finish second in the SEC by the league's coaches. With 43 points, the coaches predicted the Tiger men to finish seventh.
Returning the top-five runners from 2003 on the women's side, and with the addition of several competitive freshmen, head coach Chris Fox expects the squad to make an impact in the SEC. The 2002 team finished fourth in the SEC. Sophomore Angela Homan will be the women's top performer. After competing in the World Championships and finishing fourth in the Conference in the 5000 meters, Homan brings a wealth of experience to the table. Catherine Wanyoike, a 2002 NCAA Championships qualifier, Spring Dawson, Caitlin Reese and Sarah Reese will be top performers for Auburn.
The men's team, which came in sixth a the 2002 SEC Championships, will be led by the sophomore duo of Andrew Heath and Patrick Mouser.
Junior David Riddle is also expected to make an impact for the men.
With the addition of Scott Fuqua and Patrick Philbin, the men will add depth to their roster.
Arkansas led the preseason picks by the SEC Cross Country Coaches, selected to sweep the men's and women's titles this season. Points for the men's poll were awarded on a 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1- basis while the women's poll was awarded on an 11-10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis.
The 2003 Southeastern Conference Cross Country Championships, hosted by the University of Georgia, will be held on November 3.
Auburn kicks off its 2003 campaign on September 6 with a trip to Tennessee for the Chattanooga Invitational.
