Deese Gets 500th Career Win as Auburn Beats Austin Peay, 6-2

AUBURN â€" Auburn head coach Tina Deese picked up her 500th career victory on Friday night when the Tigers beat Austin Peay, 6-2, in the Tiger Invitational.
Deese, in her eighth year at Auburn, has 214 of her victories with the Tigers. She picked up 286 wins as the head coach at Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Ala.
Freshman Beth DiPietro went the distance for Auburn, giving up two runs on six hits while striking out two and walking four. It was her first career complete game as she moved to 2-0 on the year. Ashley Porter got the loss for the Lady Govs.
Holly Currie, Sara Dean and Sara Ghezzi had two base hits and an RBI each for Auburn, which moved to 8-2 on the year.
Auburn got on the board quickly with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Tigers were aggressive on the base paths and took advantage of a throwing error on a stolen base attempt and a wild pitch to plate Ashley Griffin and Dean. Each initially reached base with a single.
The Tigers added two more in the second. Lolani Alvarez was hit by a pitch and Lauren Walton reached on an error that sent Alvarez to third to start the inning. A successful double steal brought Alvarez home and got Walton to third. She scored on an RBI single by Dean.
Auburn added single runs in the fourth and sixth for the final margin.
Austin Peay's only run came in the second. Brianna Venable walked to open the frame. Following a Sarah Longmire groundout, Jessica Warden knocked a single and Tina Nickey hit a double to score Venable.
The Tiger Invitational will continue on Saturday when Austin Peay meets Evansville at 11 a.m. and Auburn faces Furman at 1:30 p.m. The teams will be seeded following the first two games and begin bracket play at 4 p.m.
