October 18, 2004
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Auburn cross country runner Angela Homan was awarded the SEC Cross Country Female Athlete of the Week for the second time this season after her performance at the Auburn Invitational last Monday.
Homan, a native of Delphos, Ohio, took home her third consecutive individual title this season at the AU meet. Her winning time of 17:26.67 was more than 30 seconds ahead of the second place finisher, as she led her team to a second place finish in the 20-team field.
At the Paul Short Run two weeks ago, Homan set a new personal best time of 20:27.39 in the 6K, bettering her old mark by 20 seconds. Competing in a field of 175-runners, Homan defeated top individuals from then-nationally ranked teams of Columbia, Georgetown, Villanova, Tennessee and Yale.
In the season opener at Georgia State, Homan dominated the field as she finished the 5K in 17:20.24, more than a minute ahead of the second place finisher.
“Angela has been very successful so far this season,” head cross country coach Chris Fox said. “She gets better with every meet she competes in. We have the SEC Championship next and she will go there as the reigning champion and will look to take home the title again. It has been exciting to watch her this year. She has established herself as one of the top runners in the country.”
This was the Tigers third SEC weekly honor this season. Junior Andrew Heath was named Male Athlete of the Week after the Georgia State meet.
NEXT UP: The Tigers will travel to Fayetteville, Ark., for the SEC Championships on Oct. 30.
