AUBURN - Auburn sophomore Holly Currie set a Southeastern Conference record with 10 runs batted in and tied an Auburn record with four hits as the Tigers defeated Alabama State, 19-2, in a non-conference game Wednesday at Jane B. Moore Field.

Currie went 4-for-4 with three runs scored to pace the Tigers, who improved to 4-2 on the season. Currie went 2-for-2 with a home run and a double with six RBI in Auburn's 11-run first inning. She hit her second home run of the game in the third inning, scoring Sara Dean, who had walked to begin the inning.

Currie ended her night with a double in the latter half of the third, as the Tigers batted around for the second time in the game. The final double, a left center gapper, scored two.

Currie also tied the Auburn record for most hits in a game, last achieved by Kristina McCain against Wichita State last season.

"Holly had an absolutely incredible game," Auburn head coach Tina Deese said. "She did exactly what she needed to do in each at bat and really paced our offense. She started off strong in Miami and that continued tonight against the Hornets."

Freshman Brittany Day, meanwhile, earned her first collegiate start from the circle, and impressed, throwing four innings for her first victory. Day, a Columbus, Ga., native, allowed just four hits and two runs while striking out five.

"Brittany threw the ball well tonight," Deese said. "She stayed focused even though our offense got her a big lead so early in the game."

Auburn scored 11 runs in the first inning, then after failing to put a runner across the plate in the second, scored eight more in the third.

Freshman Brittany Scott started her first career game, playing left field for the Tigers. She went 2-for-3 in the victory.

Sara Ghezzi, meanwhile, hit her first home run of the season, a three-run shot over the left field fence in the first. Dean went 1-for-1 with three runs and two RBI. McCain also had two RBI in the victory.

The Tigers next hit the field Friday by hosting the Tiger Invitational at Jane B. Moore Field. Auburn opens against College of Charleston at 3 p.m. CT, then takes on Marshall at 5:30 p.m. The game can be heard live on the Internet at www.auburntigers.com or tuning into WANI-FM (1400).
