Auburn Softball Falls To Iowa In Semifinals of Buzz Classic

MARIETTA, Ga. -- Auburn could not overcome a hot Iowa offensive attack as the Tigers fell, 16-1, Sunday in the semifinals of the Buzz Classic at the Al Bishop Softball Complex.

The loss ended Auburn's tournament run. Auburn finished 5-1 overall after posting a perfect 4-0 record during pool play. The Tigers defeated South Carolina, 6-4, early Sunday in the quarterfinals of the tournament to advance to the game with Iowa. The loss also snapped a seven-game Tiger winning streak.

The Tigers (24-6) could not muster much offensive momentum and allowed seven runs over the first two innings against the Hawkeyes, whom Auburn defeated 2-1 on Saturday in pool play. The Tigers posted six hits against the Hawkeyes. Amy Shaw had two hits to pace the Tigers. Ashley Griffin had Auburn's lone RBI in the fifth inning.

Beth DiPietro started the game and fell to 12-2 this season.

Lisa Birocci improved to 7-2 on the season for the Hawkeyes. Iowa, with the win, advanced to the championship game of the Buzz Classic. The Hawkeyes were set to face off against Ohio State, which advanced with a victory over tournament-host Georgia Tech in the other semifinal, approximately 30 minutes after their victory over Auburn.
