Auburn -- Sara Ghezzi's two-run single in the first inning proved to be the difference as Auburn defeated LSU, 2-0, Sunday in the series finale in front of 601 at Jane B. Moore Field. The win is Auburn's 42nd of the season, tying the program record set last season.

"That's a great feat at this point of the season, with six games to go in SEC play plus the tournament and postseason," Auburn head coach Tina Deese said. "It's a testament to the hard work this team has put in this season."

Ghezzi, as the sixth batter of the first inning for the Tigers, placed a bloop single right down the left field line, bringing in Holly Currie and Sara Dean. The runs marked Ghezzi's 24th and 25th driven in of the season and sent Auburn (42-13 overall, 16-7 Southeastern Conference) to its fourth straight victory.

Currie scattered two hits over seven innings for her 18th victory of the season. She allowed a double in the second and single in the third, stranding each runner at third base. She struck out six and posted her sixth shutout of the season and second in as many games.

"Holly's throwing very well right now," Deese said. "She came on in the first game and got the save and had two quality starts."

As a team, the Tigers were limited to four hits by two LSU (27-18,
9-15) pitchers. Starter Emily Turner allowed two in 1 1/3 innings of work. Turner received the loss and fell to 14-12 this season. She was the losing pitcher in each of the three games over the weekend.

Auburn threatened in the second, but was not able to get an additional run. Turner and reliever Megan Jolly walked three straight with one out, but forced the final two Auburn batters of the inning to pop up in the infield.

Auburn must now focus on No. 16 Florida, which visits Jane B. Moore Field for a three-game series beginning Tuesday. The teams will play a doubleheader Tuesday, with the first pitch slated for 5 p.m. CT. The series finale is Wednesday at 3 p.m.
