BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Auburn men's and women's cross country teams were both picked to finish sixth in the SEC Preseason Coaches' Poll, as announced by the conference office Monday. The men, who finished fourth in the conference a year ago, received 67 points, just three fewer than Alabama, who was voted fifth. Arkansas was picked first, as they received 10 of 11 first-place votes, totaling 100 points overall.
The Razorbacks have won 14 consecutive SEC titles and 31 straight conference titles, dating back to 1974 when they won 17 straight Southwest Conference titles. Florida received the only other first-place vote and tied with Tennessee for second with 77 points. After finishing fifth at the SEC Championships last year, the women received 70 points and were also voted sixth, seven points behind Florida, who was voted fifth.
The leading vote-getter on the women's side was Tennessee, who received six first-place votes and 115 points overall. Arkansas was voted second with four first-place votes and 113 points. Georgia received the remaining two first-place tallies and was picked third with 101 points. Points for the men's poll were awarded on a 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis, while the women's poll was awarded on a 11-10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis.
Auburn's first scheduled cross country meet, which was to be held Sept. 1 at the Columbus College (Ga.) Invitational, has been cancelled. Auburn's first meet will now take place Sept. 17 at the Florida State Invitational in Tallahassee, Fla.
