Tempe, Ariz. - In game two of the Sun Devil Wyndham Buttes Volleyball Classic, Auburn had two strong games but were unable to overcome Arizona State (3-4), falling in three games, 17-30, 26-30, 25-30, to even its overall record to 2-2 on the season.
The team had three players in double digits in digs, as Bailey Veit had 16, Rachel Shanks 12 and Alison Jacobs 10. Joanna Pappas led in assists again with 27 this evening. Shanks led the team in kills with nine on 29 attempts.
Auburn managed just 17 points in the first game, the lowest total so far this season, with just seven total kills and 10 digs. The Tigers improved in game two, notching 16 kills on 50 attempts. AU had 19 digs in game two, nine more than in game one. The Tigers evened the tilt four times, but were unable to come out on top, falling 26-30.
The Tigers fought hard in the third game and held their only lead during this match. Game three was knotted at 24 but ASU turned in four consecutive points and eventually won, 30-25.
In the opening match of the Sun Devil Classic, Auburn captured games one, three and five over Texas State as they handed the Bobcats its fourth loss of the season, 34-32, 23-30, 30-19, 26-30, 15-7.
