RALEIGH, N.C. -- Freshman Alex Haney continued her solid play Sunday at the Wolfpack Invitational, winning both of her matches, as the Auburn women's tennis team concluded play at the season-opening 18-team tournament.
Auburn made dramatic improvements over the course of the three-day event after being shutout on Friday. The Tigers won three matches of seven matches Saturday and were flawless on Sunday, winning all three matches.
Haney had the best showing for Auburn, as she won the last five matches she was a part of. The Grayson, Ga., native won the ninth-place singles match in the A3 draw against Gillie Bailey of East Carolina, 6-2, 6-1. In the only other singles match of the day for the the Tigers, senior Ashley Cowart won her decision in the A1 draw over K. Jiskrova of Hampton, 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles play, Haney and Cowart won their ninth-place match, 8-4, over Ana Paula Novaes and Patricia Coimbra of Winthrop.
Due to prior travel arrangements of many teams, numerous matches were cancelled on Sunday, including senior Erin Gray and freshman Rita Pljusznyin's final doubles match. The duo was scheduled to face each other in singles, but the match was not played.
The Tigers resume competition Friday, Sept. 30 at the Kentucky Fall Invitational in Lexington, Kent. For the latest news in Auburn tennis, please visit www.auburntigers.com
