SUNRIVER, Ore. - The 20th-ranked Auburn men's golf team moved into 13th after firing a 5-over 293 in the PING/Golfweek Preview second round at the par-72, 7621-yard Sunriver (Ore.) Resort's Crosswater Course Tuesday. The Tigers second round was 12 shots better than their first.
Senior All-SEC Stuart Moore followed his 81 Monday with a 2-under par 70 to jump 30 spots from a 70th into a tie for 40th. The Gainesville, Ga., native double-bogeyed the par-4 fourth hole, but made four birdies the rest of the way on Nos. 6, 9, 13 and 16. Junior Andrew Medley fell from 13th into a tie for 27th with a 76 for a 4-over 148 total.
Freshman Glenn Northcutt improved by four strokes with a 74 and is tied for 51st at 152 while sophomore Jay Moseley bettered his first round 80 with a 1-over 73 for a tie for 57th at 153. Freshman Keith White is tied for 63rd at 80-155.
"I think we were more representative of what Auburn golf is about with the way we played in the second round," Auburn head coach Mike Griffin said. "Stuart came back from a disappointing first round to have an outstanding day. That is what we expect of our senior leader. Jay and Glenn also improved from Monday, and I am happy about that."
Top-ranked Georgia lengthened its six-shot lead to 10 with its second-straight 4-under 284 for an 8-under 568 total. Sixth-ranked Georgia Tech is in second at 284-578 followed by No. 2 Oklahoma State (283-580), No. 15 Augusta State (286-581), No. 4 UNLV (292-582), No. 21 New Mexico (287-583), Kentucky (292-583), No. 9 Washington (288-586), No. 5 Duke (289-586), No. 7 BYU (290-587), No. 8 Wake Forest (292-588), No. 10 Arizona State (299-591), No. 20 Auburn (293-598), No. 11 Southern California (297-601) and host Portland (303-618).
The third and final round of the three-day, 54-hole tournament continues Wednesday with the Tigers teeing off at 11:30 am Central with Southern California and Portland. Live-scoring of the Preview can be followed at www.golfstat.com.
