BIRMINGHAM-The 25th-ranked Auburn men's golf team shot a 1-over 285 to finish eighth with a 1-over 853 total in the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate at the Old Overton Golf Club Tuesday. Second-ranked Georgia Tech fired an 8-under 276 for a 24-under 828 total to win the title.
Sophomore All-SEC Patton Kizzire tied for 14th to lead the Tigers with a 1-under 212 total following a final round 71. Senior All-SEC Stuart Moore had the best day for Auburn, carding a 1-under 70 to finish tied for 32nd with a total of 215. Junior Andrew Medley also tied for 32nd after shooting his second consecutive even par round of 71.
True freshman Glenn Northcutt finished tied for 36th at 73-216 while sophomore Jay Moseley finished in a tie for 39th with a 74-217.
"We got off to a good start, struggled in the middle, and then brought it back," said Auburn head coach Mike Griffin. "It's just another one of those early season tournaments. All five of our guys were separated by only five strokes."
Top-ranked Georgia finished in second, three shots behind Georgia Tech, with a 273-834. UAB, led by medalist Garrett Osborn (69-197), finished in third with a 281-842. Host Alabama finished in fourth with a 279-844 followed by No. 9 BYU (278-847), Tulsa (273-847), Clemson (284-851), Auburn (285-853), 12th-ranked Augusta State (287-857), Arizona (282-860), TCU (284-865) and Vanderbilt (287-869).
Next up for the Tigers is the Ridges Intercollegiate in Johnson City, Tenn, Saturday and Sunday.
