Tigers Eliminated At ITA Southern Regional

Oct. 15, 2005

ATHENS, Ga. - The final two members of the Auburn women's tennis team were eliminated from the ITA Southern Regional on Saturday. Both senior Ashley Cowart and sophomore Tori Almagno lost their consolation matches, which ended the Tigers stay at the event.

Participating in the 21-team event that was divided into two flights (A and B) of 64 players, the Tigers were able to advance senior Erin Gray and freshman Alex Haney to the third round on Thursday, but the Tigers stumbled on day two, dropping five of six matches, which left only Cowart and Almagno alive in the tournament.

After picking up the lone win for the Tigers on Friday, Cowart lost her second-round consolation match in flight A to Iciri Rai of South Florida, 7-6(0), 6-1.

Almagno received a bye on Friday, setting her up for a second-round consolation match in flight B. Playing in just her second singles match of the season after missing the previous matches with an injury, Almagno fell to Kiara Powell of Bethune-Cookman, 6-4, 7-5.

The Tigers return to action Nov. 3 at the SEC Fall Championships in Peachtree City, Georgia. For the latest news in Auburn tennis, please visit www.auburntigers.com
