Auburn Concludes Play at Kentucky Fall Invitational

Oct. 2, 2005

LEXINGTON, Kent. -- The Auburn women's tennis team almost made it through Sunday unscathed at the Kentukcy Fall Invitational, winning three of four matches. The Tigers' trio of seniors Erin Gray and Ashley Cowart and freshman Alex Haney won all three singles matches before Cowart and Haney lost their fifth-place doubles match against Lynzee Keever and Shannon Brown of Marshall, 8-6.

In the three singles victories, the Tigers went three sets in two of them. The only match that did not go the distance was Haney's ninth-place match with Marsha Ilina of East Tennessee State. Haney defeated Ilina, 6-4, 7-5, and placed ninth. Haney has now finished ninth in both tournaments this season.

Cowart placed seventh - the best finish of any Tiger - after defeating Meredith Giles of Eastern Kentucky, 6-1, 2-6, 1-0 (0).

Senior Erin Gray won a back-and-forth match over Ina Durcakova of Eastern Kentukcy. The Mobile, Ala., native defeated Durcakova by a score of 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (5). Gray's victory earned her 13th place in the C Flight.

The Tigers return to action Oct. 13-16 at the ITA Regional in Athens, Ga. For the latest news in Auburn tennis, please visit www.auburntigers.com
