Women's Golf Gains Ground In Second Round Of Lady Tar Heel Invitational

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Auburn women's golf team shot a 2-under 286 (300-286--586) in the second round of the Lady Tar Heel Invitational on Saturday under rainy conditions, maintaining its second-place spot overall, but gaining ground on first place Duke (294-288--582). The Tigers are 10-over in the tournament and the Blue Devils are 6-over after day two at the par 72, 6,285-yard UNC Finley Golf Course.

"We had a great day today," head coach Kim Evans said. "I am so proud of the team because they are out there and really competing from the top to the bottom of the lineup. Everyone is contributing and having a solid tournament. We have one round remaining, however, and we have to keep this up. There are a lot of strong teams in this tournament capable of big things on the last day."

Senior Maria Martinez sits in second place overall with a 3-under 141 (71-70) after two rounds. Leading the pack is Texas A&M's Ashley Knoll at 8-under (71-65--136) after an outstanding second round score of 65.

Sophomores Abigale Schepperle and Margaret Shirley are tied for ninth at 4-over carding identical scores of 77-71--148. The Tiger sophomores are followed by Jessica Lovell in a tie for 17th at 5-over (75-74--149) and Nicole Hage in a tie for 54th at 13-over (82-75--157) for Auburn.

In team scoring, Auburn is followed by Vanderbilt in third at 15-over (300-291--591), Wake Forest in fourth at 19-over (302-293--595) and Texas A&M in fifth at 22-over (305-293--598).
