DALTON, Ga.--The 21st-ranked Auburn men's golf team moved up three spots with a second round 290 to move into 10th with a 591 total in the 18-team Carpet Capital Collegiate at the par-72, 7010-yard The Farm Golf Club in Dalton, Ga., Saturday. The Tigers improved by 11 strokes from the first round in a field that includes 11 nationally-ranked teams.
Junior Andrew Medley fired a 4-under 68 to move from 27th into a tie for ninth at 2-under 142 and is only five shots off the individual lead. Senior All-SEC Stuart Moore is tied for 17th with a 1-over 73-145 while sophomore Jay Moseley is tied for 38th after carding an even par 72 for a 5-over 149. Freshman Glenn Northcutt is tied for 66th at 77-155 and sophomore Steven Groover is in 87th at 81-161.
Top-ranked Georgia and No. 17 Georgia State are tied for the lead at 3-under 573, three shots ahead of No. 7 Florida (294-576). No. 5 Duke is in fourth at 290-578 followed by Texas Tech (287-579), No. 2 Georgia Tech (275-580), No. 19 Clemson (289-582), East Tennessee State (289-584), North Carolina State (290-589) and No. 21 Auburn (290-591) to round out the top 10.
Sixth-ranked Tennessee (293-593) and No. 15 Augusta State (296-593) are tied for 11th ahead of TCU (290-597), No. 21 Alabama (297-600), Oklahoma (297-601), Georgia Southern (303-603), No. 20 South Carolina (304-604) and Vanderbilt (297-607).
"We played much better in the second round, which is encouraging," head coach Mike Griffin said. "However, we could have gone a whole lot lower. Stuart had another good day, and Jay played well. We just aren't getting four of the five guys hitting on all cylinders. I hope it can all come together for the final round."
Georgia's Chris Kirk holds the individual lead at 7-under 137 after shooting a second round 2-under 70, a shot ahead of Georgia State teammates Mark Haastrup (67-138) and Joel Sjoholm (69-138). Texas Tech's Andrew Dresser (70-139) and Georgia Tech's Kevin Larsen (66-139) are tied for fourth as nine players, including Auburn's Medley, are within five shots of the lead.
The third and final round of the three-day, 54-hole tournament continues Sunday with the Tigers teeing off at 10 am Central with Tennessee and Augusta State off the 10th tee. Live-scoring of the Preview can be followed at www.golfstat.com. This will be Auburn's final round of the fall season.
