AUBURN - Auburn senior Maria Martinez continues to lead the pack after day two of the Derby Invitational with a 3-under (69-72--141) at the par 72, 6,270-yard Auburn University Club on Saturday. The Tigers sit in second with a 17-over (291-302--593) behind No. 1-ranked Duke, who holds a five-stroke lead at 12-over (294-294--588).
"The nerves are still here on the second day," head coach Kim Evans said. "We had a tough day today, but we came back. Maria (Martinez) had a really good day today. The fast greens really wear on you after a while, but the girls on other teams are feeling the same effects we are. We just need to regroup and put our charge on. I don't know what it is going to take for us to get back on top. We need to play our game and stick it. You can't just leave it up to luck, but you have to play."
Martinez holds a four-stroke lead over second-place Anna Grzebien of Duke and Jenny Suh of Alabama, who both sit at 1-over 145 for the tournament. Rounding out the top five individually are Nicole Smith of Tennessee in fourth at 2-over (75-71--146) and Holly Cantwell of Tennessee, Jennifer Pandolfi of Duke, Abigale Schepperle of Auburn and Leah Wigger of Virginia in a tie for fifth each carding a 3-over 147.
"I was very excited today," Martinez said. "It was harder today because the wind was blowing and I didn't play my best. As a team we didn't play as well. We will need to regroup tonight and come up with a new strategy. Being on my home course has definitely helped, but it is still a difficult course. You still have to think about what you're doing."
Team scoring began with the Blue Devils on top at 12-over, followed by Auburn in second at 17-over, Tennessee in third at 18-over (297-297--594), Georgia in fourth firing a 23-over (294-305--599) and Virginia sits in fifth with a 27-over (297-306--603).
