GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Auburn senior Angela Homan followed up her third straight Southeastern Conference title with a second-place finish at the NCAA South Regional on Saturday at the University of Florida Golf Course. Homan finished the 6K in the second-best time of her career (20:14.83).
Unfortunately, Homan's finish was not enough to catapult the women's team to the NCAA Championships. The women placed 16th with 446 points.
The men's team placed sixth in the 10K with 175 points, finishing just 28 points behind fifth-place Georgia (147).
The only individual standing in the way of Homan's second straight regional crown was Chattanooga's Shannon Wommack, who won the meet in a time of 19:50.16. Wommack placed second behind Homan at last year's South Regional. In her four trips to the South Regional, Homan has placed 11th as a freshman, third as a sophomore, first as a junior and second as a senior.
Senior Dawn Morgan was the second Tiger to cross the line, finishing 61st in a time of 22:46.58. Sophomore Becca Bell finished 133rd in a time of 24:12.35. Sophomore Jessica Smith finished 141st (24:35.08) and fellow sophomore Megan Karl finished 159th (25:22.44).
On the men's side sophomore Jordan Davis had his best race of the season, placing 19th in a time of 31:11.62. Senior Andrew Heath was the second Tiger to cross the line, as he finished 26th in a time of 31:34.19. Sophomore Chris Walsh, who finished fifth at the meet last year, finished right behind Heath in 27th (31:35.96).
Junior Patrick Philbin finished 51st (32:27.74), while fellow junior Patrick Mouser finished 71st (33:14.14). Seniors Matt Tillman and Clay Askew finished 77th and 93rd, respectively.
Alabama won the team title with 40 points and South Alabama's Tonny Okello won the individual title in a time of 29:31.70.
