PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. - The Auburn women's tennis team had a day of mixed results on Friday at SEC Fall Coaches Classic. The Tigers dropped all four singles matches on the day, but 2-of-3 doubles teams advanced to the quarterfinals. The duo of sophomore Tori Almagno and freshman Whitney Chappell moved to the semifinals in flight "B" of doubles play.
Freshman Alex Haney, who entered the tournament with a team-best record of 7-3, dropped her opening match in the "A" flight to Whitney Benik of Florida, 0-6, 6-4, 6-4. Senior Ashley Cowart and Erin Gray both lost their opening matches. Cowart fell to Courtney Ulery of Vanderbilt and Gray lost to Mississippi's Claire Conerly. Almagno lost her match in the "C" flight to Grace Blakely of South Carolina, 7-5, 6-2. Freshman Irina Pljusznyin will play her first match of the tournament on Saturday, after having a bye in the first round of the "D" flight.
Making her Auburn debut after being out with an injury, Chappell paired with Almagno to make the most noise of any of the Tigers' doubles teams. The duo opened with a win over South Carolina's team of Blakely/Walsh and parlayed the win into a 9-7 quarterfinal victory over Felt/Juskova of Mississippi State. The pair will face the team of Bordeleau/Jovanovic of Arkansas in the semifinals of the "B" flight on Saturday.
Earlier the team of Bordeleau/Jovanovic defeated Gray and Pljusznyin, 8-1, in the quarterfinals after Gray and Pljusznyin had a bye in the first round.
Also competing in doubles play was the tandem of Cowart and Haney. The duo opened up the "A" flight with a 9-8 win over Hyndman and Leskosky of Georgia before falling in the quarterfinals to Shaub/Orlin of Tennessee, 9-7.
