AUBURN - Defending national champion South Carolina edged Auburn's equestrian team 1,777-1,169.5, but the Tigers (2-1, 0-1 SEC) upset the Gamecocks on the western end by 12.5 points at the Auburn Horse Center Saturday.

"The western end looked really good," said Auburn head coach Greg Williams. "At the end of the day they pulled out a good win."

The competition began with hunt seat over fences and western horsemanship, where the competition was tight. Halfway through the meet, South Carolina was up by 15.5 points. Auburn then won the western reigning by 10 points in the next event.

South Carolina only led by 5.5 points during the last event, hunt seat equitation, but that is as close as Auburn could get.

Auburn returns to action Nov. 11 when it travels to undefeated Georgia.

"Georgia is undefeated and extremely strong as always," said Williams. "It is going to be a good meet. We are really looking forward to it, and I think that we saw enough today to know what corrections we need to make. We are going to be very competitive when we get there."
