Athens, Ga. - Tiger junior Steve Segerlin put on a show Sunday afternoon at the Gabrielsen Natatorium as he won the platform title to end Georgia's Chris Colwill's sweep of the diving events this weekend at the Bulldog Invite.
"The overall meet was a big success for us," head AU diving coach Jeff Shaffer said. "The meet pointed out some things that we are doing well and also gave us an opportunity to compete in a prelims-finals type format and helped us see the areas that we need to work on over our Christmas training break and during the second half of the season as we look to be more competitive."
Segerlin, who competed at all three levels this weekend, put it all together on Sunday afternoon to not only take home his first title of the weekend, but also earn the zone qualifier with a total of 360.50 points. Competing for the first time this season on platform, the reigning SEC champion on this event, defeated Bulldog Chris Colwill to end his win streak as Colwill had earned the win on both 1- and 3-meter's this weekend.
"The platform went well for us today," Shaffer said. "Steve won the men's platform and Chris Colwill finished second, both were a little bit behind their NCAA Championship form but Steve managed to squeak out the win."
On the women's side, junior Lynnsey Segraves competed on platform for the first time this season and finished fourth with a point total of 202.30, after hitting her feet on her second of six dives. Segraves was not injured on the dive and finished strong on the remaining four dives.
"Lynnsey did a great job and ended up fourth," Shaffer noted. "She hit her feet on her second dive and scored all one's and came back strong and earned seven's on her next two dives, but with only five dives to compete was not able to jump back up into the top spot. She was only ten points out of first with a poor second dive."
The AU diving team makes at trip back to Georgia on Jan. 6-8, for the Georgia Diving Invite. For complete results from all three days of competition this weekend in Athens, Ga., please visit the Bulldogs athletic web site at www.georgiadogs.com.
