BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. - The Auburn women's golf team recorded the second-lowest team round in school history Saturday afternoon as it jumped into first place at the Lady Gamecock Classic at the par 72, 5,996-yard University Club. The Tigers fired a 10-under 278 in the second round for a two-day total of 6-over 304-278--582, good enough for a six-stroke lead.
"Wow, what a great day for us," head coach Kim Evans said. "I know that each of these girls is capable of a performance like that, but to put it all together in one round is really exciting. Unfortunately, we still have one round to play so we need to re-focus and start looking at tomorrow."
Auburn's complete performance includes four counting scores under par. Senior Maria Martinez currently leads the field as she recorded a 4-under 68 on the day for a two-day total of 73-68--141. Martinez is followed by Nicole Hage in a tie for second at 74-69--143, Margaret Shirley is tied for 15th carding a 77-72--149, Abigale Schepperle sits in a tie for 21st with an 80-70--150 and Jessica Lovell is tied for 34th with an 83-71--154 after two rounds.
On the day, Martinez was 4-under 68, Hage fired a 3-under 69, Schepperle was 2-under 70, Lovell fired a 1-under 71 and Shirley scored an even par 72.
Behind the Tigers in team play is Tennessee, who has recorded a 12-over 300-288--588, Virginia is in third carding a 15-over 302-289--591, Florida State sits in fourth with a 21-over 302-295--597 and North Carolina is in fifth at 22-over 305-293--598.
