BIRMINGHAM - The Auburn men's golf team earned its first top five finish of the season with a final round 7-over 295 for a 22-over 886 total to finish fifth in the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate Tuesday. No. 10 Alabama carded a 5-over 293 for a 5-over 869 total to claim the title.
Junior Patton Kizzire followed his second round 70 with an even-par 72 in the final round to finish tied for 10th at 3-over 219. Sophomore Glenn Northcutt had a 4-over 76 and finished tied for 18th with a 6-over 222 total. Junior Jay Moseley carded his best round of the tournament, an even-par 72, to finish tied for 23rd at 8-over 224. Senior Andrew Medley tied for 34th at 72-225 while sophomore Jake Nolen tied for 37th at 75-226.
"It was good to see Patton and Jay with solid rounds today," head coach Mike Griffin said. "We improved from the beginning of the tournament to the end, and that is what you want to do. We just need to start a little better, and we dug ourselves too big of a hole."
Tennessee finished in second, six shots behind Alabama, with a 288-875. Florida State finished third at 295-882 followed by Central Florida (300-885), Auburn (295-886), Michigan State (304-893), Baylor (298-894), North Carolina State (305-896), SMU (304-899), UAB (301-900), LSU (306-901), Virginia (298-901), Georgia Southern (302-906), No. 22 North Florida (303-909) and Samford (307-918).
Florida State's Jonas Blixt claimed the individual title with a 68-76-67--211, three shots ahead of LSU's Brian Noonan (74-68-72--214).
Auburn returns to Birmingham Oct. 9 for the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate at Old Overton Golf Club.
