Knoxville, Tenn. - The Auburn women's golf team carded a second round 301 Saturday to remain in first place at the UT Mercedes-Benz Women's Collegiate, played at the par 71, 5,932-yard Cherokee Country Club in Knoxville, Tenn.
"We played well enough to stay in the lead today," Auburn head coach Kim Evans said. "But we need a better final round tomorrow if we want to win the tournament. Several teams in contention put up lower scores than we did today."
The Tigers (287-301--588) lead shrank from nine stokes to just four after Saturday's round. Georgia (296-296--592) stroked a second straight round of 296 and now stands alone in second place. Tennessee (298-298--596) is eight strokes off the lead in third place, and Arkansas (303-296--599) is 11 strokes off the lead in fourth place. The Swedish Junior National Team (296-306--602) rounds out the top five at 14 strokes off the lead.
Nicole Hage (71-72--143) leads the Tigers in individual play in a tie for second place at one-over after round two. Abigale Schepperle (71-77--148) is tied for tenth at 6-over after a second round 77, while Candace Schepperle (73-76--149) and Margaret Shirley (72-77--149) are tied for 16th place at 7-over par. Jessica Lovell (75-76--151) is the last Tiger on the leader board in a tie for 26th place at 9-over par.
