Tigers Drop Match To Georgia, 3-1

AUBURN, Ala. -

The Auburn University volleyball team fell to Georgia, 3-1 (30-28, 24-30, 30-22, 30-17) on Friday, at the Student Activities Center in Auburn. The loss drops the Tigers to 12-10 overall and 4-7 in the SEC, while the Bulldogs move to 6-16 overall and 2-10 in the conference.

Junior Rachel Shanks recorded her 11th double-double of the season with 17 kills and 10 digs. Sophomore Jessica Glover totaled her 10th double-double with 12 kills and 15 digs, while junior Whitney Jacob tallied her sixth double-double on a 15 kill, 11 dig effort. Sophomore Joanna Pappas dished out 53 assists to go with nine digs and junior Jelena Sekulic had nine kills and eight digs.

"We controlled game two but we didn't manage the ball well in game three," head coach Laura Farina said. "We were standing around instead of anticipating and we have to play with a sense of urgency."

In game one, Auburn took the lead on the first point and maintained it until Georgia tied the match at 27. The Bulldogs took the lead on the next point and scored two of the next three points to steal game one, 30-28.

After being tied 4-4 in game two, UGA took a short lead before AU evened the score again at nine. The two teams exchanged points until Auburn took its final lead at 18-17. The Tigers used a 9-3 run to put the game out of reach and head into intermission tied at 1-1 with a 30-24 win in the second.

Georgia held the lead the entire third game after jumping out to an early 8-2 advantage. Aunburn cut the lead to two but never got any closer and dropped the third game, 30-22.

The Tigers' only lead of the fourth game and last of the match came on a kill by Glover to open the stanza. After two ties, Georgia took the lead and began to pull away, leading by as many as 13 and winning the final game by that same margin, 30-17.

Auburn will remain home for its fourth-straight home match as the Tigers host South Carolina at 1:30 p.m. at Beard-Eaves Coliseum on Sunday.
