A wet Auburn University Club course surrendered only one round at par Saturday, and it belonged to Auburn's Margaret Shirley. Her first round 72 put her atop the individual leaderboard and helped fifth-ranked Auburn into second place as a team.
"The course played tough with all of the rain we had this week," Auburn head coach Kim Evans said. "Margaret hit the ball well today, and we're fortunate that her play has put us in a position to win tomorrow."
Six other Tigers took to the course behind Shirley on Saturday. Candace Schepperle shot a 4-over 76 to land in a tie for 22nd place, while Nicole Hage was one stroke better and finished the day tied for 12th place. Jessica Lovell's 6-over 78 placed her in a tie for 39th, and Abigale Schepperle's 7-over 79 placed her in a tie for 44th place. Marisa Milligan played as an individual and carded a 2-over 74, a score good enough to place her in a tie for second place. Mariana Macias also played as an individual and stroked an 11-over 83 to finish the day in a tie for 76th place.
In team play, the Tigers first round 303 places them second on a leaderboard that is very crowded at the top. Auburn is two strokes behind North Carolina (301), while LSU is two strokes behind Auburn in third place after an opening round 305. Baylor and Alabama round out the top five after rounds of 306 and 308, respectively. Tennessee, Ole Miss, and Florida State are all one stroke behind the Crimson Tide in a tie for 6th place.
Auburn will look to win its second consecutive Derby Invitational Sunday, as the Tigers take to the links for an 8:45 a.m. CT shotgun start. They will be paired with North Carolina and LSU for the round.
