Auburn Men's Golf Falls To No. 4 UCLA, No. 8 Coastal Carolina In Callaway Golf Collegiate Match Play Championship

FORT WORTH, Texas - The Auburn men's golf team fell in the opening round to fourth-ranked UCLA, 3-2, and in the consolation round to eighth-ranked Coastal Carolina, 4-1, eliminating the Tigers in the Callaway Golf Collegiate Match Play Championship at the par-71, 7,010-yard Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas Sunday.

In the opening round, sophomore Glenn Northcutt was defeated by the Bruins' Jason Kang, 6-and-5, while junior Patton Kizzire outlasted James Lee, 1-up. Junior Jay Moseley won, 3-and-2, over Peter Campbell. Junior Steven Groover fell to Craig Leslie, 5-and-3, and senior Andrew Medley was defeated by Lucas Lee, 3-and-2.

In the consolation match, Coastal Carolina's Dustin Johnson defeated Northcutt, 3-and-1, Zach Byrd topped Kizzire, 1-up, Cameron Hooper defeated Moseley, 6-and-4, and Joachim Fourquet defeated Medley, 8-and-4. Groover claimed Auburn's only victory, defeating Lindsay Renolds, 2-and-1.

"Both UCLA and Coastal Carolina are outstanding teams," head coach Mike Griffin. "I was proud of our effort. I was happy with the way Jay and Patton played in the first round. This was a good experience for our guys."

Other first round matches include No. 2 Florida over Arizona, No. 19 Duke over No. 15 UNLV, No. 6 Clemson over Washington, No. 18 Texas A&M over No. 21 Arizona State and No. 9 Georgia over No. 25 Minnesota.

In the second round, Florida was victorious over Duke, Oklahoma State over Clemson, Lamar over UCLA and Texas A&M over Georgia.

The Tigers begin the spring season Feb. 21-23 at the John Burns Intercollegiate in Wahiawa, Hawaii.
