The Auburn University volleyball team fell to Ole Miss, 3-1 (30-21, 29-31, 30-20, 30-21) on Friday at the Gillom Sports Center in oxford. The loss drops the Tigers to 11-7 overall and 3-4 in the SEC.
Junior Rachel Shanks led the Tigers with 16 kills, while adding 10 digs. Sophomore Joanna Pappas totaled 42 assists and led the squad with 14 digs, while junior Whitney Jacob had 10 kills and 10 digs.
"It's a disappointing loss," head coach Laura Farina said. "We need to respond better when other teams attack us."
In game one, the Rebels scored the game's first six points and jumped out to a quick 8-1 lead, before Auburn responded with a 4-0 run to move the score to 8-5. The Tigers found themselves down just 11-9 when the Rebels answered back and took hold of the stanza with a 20-11 advantage. AU would get no closer than six the rest of the way and Ole Miss took game one, 30-21.
The Tigers took their first lead of the match, 5-4 early in game two and held that advantage, using three aces from Jacob, until Ole Miss tied the match at 29. Kills by Glover and Jacob ended the second game, giving the Tigers a 31-29 win.
Auburn fell behind in game three, 8-3, but went on a 5-1 run to pull within one (9-8). The Rebels maintained their one-point lead until a 3-0 run gave them a 14-10 lead. Ole Miss extended that advantage to 25-18 and took game three, 30-20.
After AU held a 7-5 advantage in game four, Ole Miss tied it up at 9-9 and took a 16-9 lead with a 7-0 run. The lead mounted to as many as nine (18-9) before Auburn used a 7-3 run to get back in the game. The Rebels regained momentum and used a 6-0 run to put the game out of reach (27-17) and win, 30-21.
The Tigers will travel to Starkville to take on Mississippi State, Sunday. Match time will be 1:30 p.m. CT.
