AUBURN, Ala. - The Auburn women's basketball team opened the game with 16 unanswered points and never looked back on its way to a 91-23 exhibition victory over Tuskegee Tuesday night in Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum.
KeKe Carrier was the Tigers' leading scorer, dropping in 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the field and adding two free throws. Alexis Ogubie, Sherell Hobbs, Tamela McCorvey and Joanna Clayden also reached double figures on the night. Hobbs posted her second double-double of her career with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
"I think being able to get out and run was good for us tonight," Auburn head coach Nell Fortner said. "In the first half we were able to push the tempo and we played some pretty good defense."
Every other player on the Auburn team managed a field goal as the team dished 29 assists in the game. Whitney Boddie led the team with 10, a would-be career high.
Auburn was 37-of-68 from the field and 7-of-21 from beyond the three-point arc. Clayden hit five threes, another would-be career high.
Auburn took care of business on the boards as well, pulling down 49 rebounds to Tuskegee's 26. The rebounding advantage led to 16 second-chance points for Auburn.
The Tigers put together a strong defensive effort in the game, holding Tuskegee to just 23 points while creating 27 turnovers. The Golden Tigers only scored five points in the first half, and 19 of their turnovers also came in the opening frame.
Auburn held the Golden Tigers scoreless for 11 minutes and 11 seconds between an Aisha Johnson free throw with 1:43 remaining in first half and a Johnson lay-in with 10:32 remaining in the game. Tuskegee managed only seven field goals on 47 attempts in the loss.
Johnson was the high scorer for the Tigerettes, putting 15 points on the board while contributing five rebounds and one assist.
The exhibition game was the first in an Auburn uniform for three Tigers. McCorvey, Trevesha Jackson and Jordan Greenleaf all saw their first action in orange and blue, with McCorvey earning a start in the game.
The Tigers will hit the road for their regular season opener Friday, Nov. 10, at Western Carolina. Tip-off in Cullowhee, N.C., is set for 6 p.m. CT. Auburn's home opener is Wednesday, Nov. 15, vs. Alabama State at 6 p.m. CT.
