Atlanta, Ga. - Auburn senior diver's Lynnsey Segraves and Steven Segerlin combined for three titles at the Georgia Tech Invitational on Saturday afternoon. Segraves was victorious on 3-meter and Segerlin swept both springboard events.
"It was a positive day for us," Auburn head diving coach Jeff Shaffer said. "We have made improvements over the past month and it was encouraging to see those today. This was only our third competition this season. It is always good to get prelim/final format experience as we prepare for three end of the season competitions."
Not only did Segerlin take both the 1- and 3-meter titles, but he also turned in season best scores of 348.20 (1-meter) and 374.85 (3-meter) in the afternoon finals. Newcomer Dan Mazzaferro was runner-up on 3-meter with a season best 336.60 and classmate Kelly Marx was third on 1-meter (280.50). Marx turned in a season best 309.55 in the prelim round.
On the women's side, Segraves also turned in improved zone qualifying scores on both 1- and 3-meter. Her score of 305.70 on 3-meter was good enough for the win. Both Segraves and sophomore Corey Gerlach were in contention for the victory on 1-meter, but both had mishaps on the final dive. Segraves ended up third (266.95) and Gerlach second (270.30). Both scores were season bests.
The top two performers from each school (Auburn, Georgia Tech and LSU) advanced to the final round but other divers scores from the preliminary competition did count toward zone qualifying. Newcomer Caleb Dunnichay posted his first zone qualifier of the season with a 3-meter score of 314.35.
The Tigers will return to the diving well on Sunday for the platform competition.
