BATON ROUGE, La. - LSU (19-2, 6-1) got 19 points from Sylvia Fowles and 17 from Quianna Chaney in a 65-45 runaway win over Auburn (15-7, 2-4) Sunday afternoon at the Maravich Assembly Center in Baton Rouge, La. The Bayou Bengals never trailed in the game and pulled away late to extend their home winning streak to 42 games.
"We couldn't find the basket very well," Auburn head coach Nell Fortner said. "We weren't as aggressive today as we have been in the past. We didn't do a good job of attacking the basket."
Whitney Boddie led an Auburn offense that was stifled much of the day with 14 points and six rebounds. Sherell Hobbs contributed eight points, while DeWanna Bonner and Tamela McCorvey each netted six.
Auburn pulled within 10 points twice in the second half, but could never get the difference into single digits.
The Tigers' best chance came early in the second half. With 17:07 remaining, Bonner hit two free throws to make the score 32-22. Auburn got a defensive stop, but couldn't score on its next possession as a Hobbs jumper missed its mark. On the Bayou Bengals' next two possessions, they converted a jumper and a three to make the score 37-22.
Auburn again cut the deficit to 10 with seven minutes remaining, but couldn't stop Fowles on LSU's next possession. She grabbed an offensive rebound and was fouled on the put-back. After she hit the free throws, Auburn went cold, failing to score on its next seven possessions. LSU pulled ahead 58-37 and never looked back.
The Tigers trailed by 12 at the half after going almost eight minutes without scoring. LSU jumped out to an 11-3 lead in the first seven minutes before Auburn responded with a 10-5 run to pull within three at 16-13.
Over the next seven-plus minutes, Auburn couldn't find the bottom of the net, and LSU scored nine unanswered points to take a 25-13 lead. Both teams scored twice in the final two minutes of the half to make the score 30-18 at the break.
Auburn shot 18-of-55 (32.7 percent) from the field and was only 1-of-9 from three. LSU shot 23-of-55 (41.8 percent) and outrebounded Auburn 43-33, thanks in large part to 20 boards from Fowles.
The Tigers will look to rebound from the loss when they host Alabama on Feb. 1st. Tip-off at Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum is set for 6 p.m. CT.
