Athens, Ga. - In just the second platform competition of the season, the Auburn men's diving team represented well, taking the top four places. Steven Segerlin, the defending national champion on the event, completed his three-day sweep of all three events today by winning platform, 357.45.
"I couldn't be more proud of the group," head diving coach Jeff Shaffer said. "We met the majority of the goals we set going into this championship format type of meet. We had everyone dive in a final and that will help us down the road at SEC's and NCAA's when we compete in the same format."
For the second straight meet, Segerlin was able to win all three events, 1- and 3-meter's and platform. In doing so at the Georgia Diving Invitational, he became just the second person in 11 years to sweep the events.
Following behind Segerlin were newcomers Dan Mazzaferro (341.05), Kelly Marx (299.65) and sophomore Scott Morgan (270.55). All three scores were season high's and Mazzaferro's 341.05 was a 43.50 improvement and a zone qualifying score.
On the women's side, freshman Emily Griesmer competed on platform for the first time in her collegiate career and not only finished second but also earned a zone qualifying score, 242.35.
"We still have some work to do on both the men and women's side. Steve and Dan were a little off today on platform. I was especially pleased with Scott this week as he is learning how to compete and is adding to our team. Emily qualifying for zone's was huge for us as we now have all three girls going to the zone championships," Shaffer said.
The Tigers return to action on Friday, January 11, when Auburn hosts top-ranked Texas at the James E. Martin Aquatics Center.
