Tigers Take Second At Cancun Classic

CANCUN, Mexico -

Competing in their first-ever Cancun Classic on Friday, No. 20 Auburn put together a solid second-place performance that challenged for the title heading into the final rotation. The Tigers finished second with a team score of 194.150, behind No. 13 Iowa State, who totaled a 195.60.

Auburn's team total was .475 higher than their opening meet of last season (193.675) at the Super Six, where they took fifth.

BYU took third with a 194.025, while No. 18 Missouri wound up fourth with a 192.625.

Individually, junior Julie Dwyer took first in the all-around with a 39.225, while also finishing first on beam, and second on bars and floor. The Bloomington, Ind., native has now won 13 all-around titles.

Freshman Krissy Voss placed third in the all around after posting a 38.275 in her first collegiate meet. Junior Kayla Gies also took home a medal for her solid performance on vault, where she scored a career best 9.875.

The Tigers opened the meet on beam with a 49.125, and held the lead after the first rotation. Dwyer posted the top score for the Tigers with a 9.90, while junior A.J Mills scored a 9.825. Senior Shanna Somero, junior Kayla Gies and sophomore Lindsey Puckett each posted a 9.800.

In the second rotation, AU posted a 48.225 with Dwyer leading the way after scoring a 9.825. Mills posted a 9.775, followed by freshman Carmen Nelms with a 9.725. Voss secured a 9.650 and sophomore Claire Seiffert added a 9.250.

Heading into the third rotation, Auburn trailed ISU by .35 (97.700 to 97.350). The Tigers came away with a 48.900 on vault after Gies' 9.875 led the squad. Puckett totaled a 9.825, while Voss looked impressive with a 9.800. Dwyer and Somero rounded out the five scorers with a pair of 9.700's.

In the fourth and final rotation, the Tigers needed to make up .65 points to catch Iowa State. With bars awaiting, the team garnered a 47.900. Dwyer scored a 9.800, followed by sophomore Alicia Lenkiewicz's 9.675. Gies posted a 9.600, while Puckett and Mills each had a 9.250.

Auburn opens its home slate against NC State on Friday, Jan. 12 at 7p.m., in Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum. The first 500 fans will recieve a mini glitter lamp.
