AUBURN - Myesha Finney hit her second career home run and first of the 2007 season as the Auburn softball team came-from-behind for a 6-3 victory over Tennessee Tech Friday at Jane B. Moore Field.
The Tigers continue play at the Tiger Invitational Friday in the 3 p.m. CT game against Notre Dame.
Against Tennessee Tech (2-4), Finney hit her two-run shot two pitches after a foul pop was dropped by the Golden Eagle catcher for an error. The error allowed Finney to slam a shot over the left field fence off Tennessee Tech reliever Kristina Hortert.
The home run gave the Tigers and reliever Holly Currie a three-run cushion going into the seventh. Currie took advantage of that lead, getting through the inning for her third win of the season. She worked four innings after coming on in relief of starter Anna Thompson. She struck out four while walking two. Currie limited the Golden Eagles to three hits.
Thompson, in her third start of the season, threw three innings and did not earn a decision. She struck out eight, walked one, and held the Golden Eagles to two hits, both home runs.
"Holly came in threw well after Anna," Auburn head coach Tina Deese said. "Anna also was working well, but left a couple pitches in the zone Tennessee Tech took advantage of.
"The offense really came through and took advantage of a few miscues. That's a very good sign this early in the season."
Auburn got on the scoreboard in the fourth. Currie began the inning with a single and was pinch ran for by Krista Klein. Tatiana Fernandez moved Klein to second on a sacrifice bunt. The next batter, Sara Ghezzi, singled to right and advanced to second on the throw from right.
Nicole Russo drove in Auburn's first run of the game and her first of the season with a single to right, scoring Klein from third and moving Ghezzi up a base. Jorja Bell then tied the score with a sacrifice fly to left.
The Tigers put on a two-out rally in the fifth to pull ahead for good. Lauren Walton beat out a throw from third for an infield single to keep the inning alive. Holly Currie walked, putting runners at first and second, and then watched Fernandez drive in Walton from third with a single to left. A batter later, the Tigers took advantage of a Tennessee Tech error on a Ghezzi line drive to make the score 4-2.
Tennessee Tech touched up Thompson early, scoring two runs on solo home runs in the second inning. Ashley Botts began the inning with a solo shot over the left field fence that hugged the line. Two batters later, and with Auburn having recorded an out, Bonnie Bynum went deep to left center.
Currie and Ghezzi both had two hits to pace the nine-hit Auburn attack.
Tiger Notes: The Tigers wore their blue uniforms for the game is 2-1 in them this season ... Anna Thompson has now struck out 46 batters in 26 innings this season ... The win was Currie's 54 in four seasons ... That is six behind tying Kristen Keyes for most in an AU uniform.
