AUBURN - Anna Thompson struck out 10 en route to her first career victory as the Auburn softball team defeated Tulsa, 9-1, in six innings Saturday at Jane B. Moore Field.

The win improved Auburn's record to 4-7 after the Tigers dropped a 1-0 decision to Virginia Tech earlier in the day.

Against the Golden Hurricane (2-6), Thompson scattered six hits and one run in a complete-game, six-inning effort. She walked one to improve to 1-3 this season.

"It's great to get Anna her first win," Auburn head coach Tina Deese said. "Our offense really came through for her and took advantage of miscues and some key hits. This was a complete win."

Sara Ghezzi paced Auburn's offensive attack, with pelted eight hits. Ghezzi was 2 for 3 with two RBI. She singled in the first and fifth innings and walked with the bases loaded in the sixth.

Myesha Finney also had a big day offensively for the Tigers, going 2 for 3 with three runs scored. She had two singles in the win.

Holly Currie hit her second home run of the season early on, slamming a pitch from Tulsa starter Jackie Lawrence over the left field fence to put Auburn up, 2-0.

Already up, 2-1, the Tigers began their offensive onslaught in the fifth inning, putting four runs across the plate. The Tigers wrapped out three hits in the inning, highlighted by Nicole Russo's bloop double down the right field line that scored two.

The Tigers scored three more in the sixth to end the game by mercy rule. Ghezzi walked in one of the team's runs, while Whitney Wyatt, in her first collegiate at bat, singled to end the game.

Lawrence fell to 1-2 on the season after allowing eight hits and nine runs in 5 1/3 innings.

The Tigers finish play at the Tiger Invitational Sunday with a 3 p.m. CT contest against UAB. Catch the game live on the Internet at www.auburntigers.com or by tuning into WZMG-AM (910).
