Auburn Men's Golf Tied For Third After John Burns Intercollegiate First Round

WAHIAWA, Hawaii - Led by Jay Moseley's 4-under 68, the Auburn men's golf team fired a 4-under 284 in the first round of the John Burns Intercollegiate at the par-72, 6,916-yard Leilehua Golf Course Wednesday. The Tigers are tied for third with Colorado State and Long Beach State, seven shots behind sixth-rankedUNLV (277) and five strokes behind No. 14 BYU (279).

Moseley, who finished runner-up in last year's John Burns, is tied for fourth, three shots behind Long Beach State's Michael Drake. Junior Jamie Bowen carded a 3-under 69 in his Auburn debut to finish tied for eighth, one stroke behind Moseley.

Sophomore Glenn Northcutt shot a 2-over 73 and is tied for 49th followed by juniors Gordon Strother (74) in a tie for 65th and Patton Kizzire (76), who was 2-under through six holes, in a tie for 88th. Senior Andrew Medley, playing individually, is tied for 15th at 2-under 70.

"We drove it well and chipped well, but we struggled putting today," head coach Mike Griffin said. "Jay continues to play well on this course, and I was really proud of Jamie. We need to get some other guys going tomorrow."

No. 15 Texas A&M, New Mexico, Denver and California are tied for sixth at 1-under 287 followed by Nevada (288), SMU (289), UC-Santa Barbara (289), San Diego State (289), Texas-El Paso (293) and San Diego (293) to round out the top 15.

Arizona (294) is in 16th followed by Fresno State (296), Arkansas (297), Hawaii (298), Utah (300), San Jose State (303) and Hawaii-Hilo (306).

The tournament continues when the second round tees off Thursday at noon Central.
