Auburn Men's Golf In Fifth After John Burns Intercollegiate Second Round

SCHOFIELD BARRACKS, Hawaii---The Auburn men's golf team is tied for fifth with a 284-289--573 after the second round of the 22-team John Burns Intercollegiate at the par 72, 6918-yard Leilehua Golf Course Thursday.

Sixth-ranked UNLV continues to lead as it shot a second-consecutive 11-under 277 for a 22-under 554 total, 10 strokes ahead of No. 14 BYU (285-564). No. 15 Texas A&M (282-569) is tied for third with San Diego State (280-569), four shots ahead of Auburn, Denver (286-573) and Colorado State (289-573).

SMU is in eighth with a 285-574 followed by Arizona (281-575), Nevada (288-576), California (289-576), Long Beach State (294-578), UC-Santa Barbara (293-582), San Diego (291-584), Arkansas (287-584), New Mexico (297-584), UTEP (298-591), Utah (292-592), Hawaii (295-593), Fresno State (297-593), Hawaii-Hilo (296-602) and San Jose State (313-616).

Senior Andrew Medley, playing as an individual, is tied for 12th with a pair of 70s for a 4-under 140, six shots behind co-leaders Jarred Texter (69-65--134) of UNLV and SMU's Frank Wrenn (67-67--134).

Gordon Strother is tied for 18th by firing a 4-under 68 for a 2-under 142 while Jay Moseley is tied for 25th with a 75-143. Jamie Bowen is tied for 34th with an even par 75-144, Glenn Northcutt is tied for 54th with a pair of 73s and Patton Kizzire is tied for 77th with a 73-149.

"Thank goodness for Gordon," said head coach Mike Griffin. " He kept us close enough that without his 68 we would be in serious trouble. He shot a 31 on the back with a bogey. We are still in the thick of things so we need to finish strong Friday."

The final round of the three-day, 54-hole tournament is Friday with Auburn paired with San Diego State and Denver.
