SCHOFIELD BARRACKS, Hawaii - The Auburn men's golf team fired a 1-under 287 in the final round of the John Burns Intercollegiate to finish tied for sixth with a 284-289-287--860 at the par 72, 6,918-yard Leilehua Golf Course Friday.
No. 14 BYU, who began the day 10 strokes out of the lead, blistered the field with a final round 270 to claim the title at 30-under 279-285-270--834. Sixth-ranked UNLV (277-277-288--842) finished second followed by No. 15 Texas A&M (287-282-286--855), San Diego State (289-280-287--856), Colorado State (284-289-285--858), Auburn, Arizona (294-281-285--860), Nevada (288-288-286--862), UC Santa Barbara (289-293-280--862) and SMU (289-285-289--863).
Long Beach State (284-294-287--865) and California (287-289-289--865) tied for 11th, ahead of Denver (287-286-297--870), San Diego (293-291-288--872), Arkansas (297-287-288--872), New Mexico (287-297-290--874), Utah (300-292-288--880), Hawaii (298-295-290--883), Fresno State (296-297-299--892), Hawaii-Hilo (306-296-297--899), UTEP (293-298-311--902) and San Jose State (303-313-DNF).
Andrew Medley, playing as an individual, carded his third straight 70 to finish tied for eighth at 6-under 210, his third career top-10 finish. Jay Moseley (71-214) and Gordon Strother (72-214) tied for 26th followed by Glenn Northcutt (71-217) in a tie for 38th, Jamie Bowen (75-219) in a tie for 52nd and Patton Kizzire (73-222) in a tie for 75th.
SMU's Frank Wrenn (67-67-69--203) claimed the individual title, one shot ahead of BYU's Jake Ellison (69-69-66--204).
"We made an easy course play difficult," head coach Mike Griffin said. "When we drove it well, we didn't putt. We just have to get back to work. I am happy with the way Andrew played. This should get him going, and it's a great way to start off his final spring."
The Tigers return to action at the Seminole Intercollegiate March 4-6 in Tallahassee, Fla.
