Hayley Peirsol Finishes Fifth In 1500m At FINA World Championships

AUBURN, Ala. - Hayley Peirsol, who helped lead the Auburn women's swimming and diving team to its fifth NCAA title in six years earlier this month, finished in fifth place Tuesday in the final of the 1500m freestyle at the 2007 FINA World Championships, being held in Melbourne, Australia.

Peirsol, who had the fastest time during Monday's prelims of 16:02.82, recorded a time of 16:12.84 in the finals to finish in fifth place. Peirsol, who won NCAA titles in the 1650 free in 2006 and 2007, finished behind USA teammate Kate Ziegler, who won the race in 15:53.05.

In the only other action involving a former Auburn swimmer during Tuesday's third day of competition, Erin Volcan placed 40th in the prelims of the women's 200 free with a time of 2:04.00.

Competition at the FINA World Championships continues through April 1.
