TAMPA, Fla. - The Auburn softball team lost its third game at the USF Louisville Slugger Tournament, 2-1, to Central Michigan to open play Saturday.
Auburn drops to 10-10 overall and 2-1 at the tournament. The Tigers are scheduled to continue play Saturday at 1 p.m. ET against Maryland.
The Tigers finished with six hits against the Chippewas (2-5 overall) but managed just three hits in the final five innings.
Auburn's only run of the game came in the first on Holly Currie's solo home run over the left center field fence. The shot was her team-leading fourth of the season and 31st of her career.
Central Michigan scored solo runs in the first and second innings for the win. Jacque Benedict singled home a run in the first, and in the second, Christina Novak came around to score on a bunt single by Tracy Kaatz and an Auburn error.
Brittany Day started her third game of the season and worked three innings, allowing two runs - one earned - and three hits, but dropped to 0-1 this season. She struck out a season-high three batters and walked three.
Currie relieved Day in the fourth and worked four innings, striking out seven while walking two. She scattered just one hit.
Ali Pettit earned the win for Central Michigan, improving to 1-3 this season. She walked one and struck out two.
Tiger Notes: The Tigers wore their white uniforms and are now 2-3 in them this season ... Holly Currie struck out the side in the fourth inning, her first inning of relief ... Sara Ghezzi saw her season-high eight-game hit streak snapped against Central Michigan ... She went 0 for 2 with a sacrifice bunt Saturday ... The Tigers dropped to 1-8 in one-run games this season.
