EVANS, Ga. - The 21st-ranked Auburn men's golf team is tied for 15th after shooting a 10-over 298 in the first round of the Administaff Augusta State Invitational at the par-72, 7,301-yard Champions Retreat Golf Club Friday in Evans, Ga.
Seventeenth-ranked North Carolina is in first at 9-under 279 followed by No. 11 Coastal Carolina (282), No. 15 Tennessee (283), South Carolina (289), Georgia State (290), North Florida (291), South Carolina-Aiken (293), No. 13 East Tennessee State (293), Notre Dame (294), Virginia Tech (295), North Carolina State (295) and No. 10 Clemson (295) to round out the top 10.
Minnesota is in 13th with a 296 followed by Augusta State (297), No. 21 Auburn (298), Virginia (298), Houston (300) and Georgia Southern (303).
Junior Jamie Bowen had another superb round for the Tigers with a 3-under 69 and is tied for sixth. After turning at even-par, he birdied three of the next five holes to put him at 3-under. Bowen is coming off impressive performances in the Morris Williams Intercollegiate and the Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational where he tied for sixth and seventh, respectively.
Junior Gordon Strother began the day with a 6 on the par-4 first hole, but went even-par the rest of the day to tie for 38th at 2-over 74. Glenn Northcutt is tied for 71st with a 77 followed by Jay Moseley and Patton Kizzire in a tie for 76th with a 78s.
"Jamie is really playing well for us," head coach Mike Griffin said. "We need some of the others to step up. We're going to come back tomorrow morning and see if we can move up the leaderboard."
South Carolina's George Bryan holds the individual lead with a 6-under 66. Tennessee's Jonathan Mount is one shot back with a 67, and three others are tied for third at 4-under 68.
