West Point, Miss. - The Auburn women's golf team shot a 10-over 298 and stands in ninth place after the first day of the SEC Championship held at the par 72, 6,432-yard Old Waverly course located in West Point, Miss.
The Tigers are 12 strokes off leader Georgia who shot a 3-under 285. The Lady Bulldogs are followed by Alabama (291), Tennessee (292), LSU (294) and South Carolina (295). Florida, Arkansas and Vanderbilt are all tied for sixth after shooting 296.
"This is exactly what you expect at this tournament," Auburn head coach Kim Evans said. "There are a lot of talented teams here and some low scores have already been posted. We are in ninth, but still very much in contention. We had a solid first day and we hope to come out and get things going in the right direction early tomorrow."
Auburn shot a 10-over 298 on the day led by red-shirt freshman Marisa Milligan, who shot even par and is tied for eighth. Individually, Georgia also boasts the leader - Garrett Phillips - who shot a 5-under 67. Phillips is followed by Tennessee's Marci Turner (68) in second and Alabama's Helena Blomberg and Georgia's Taylor Leon are tied for third (69).
Individually after the first round, Auburn's Nicole Hage and Candace Schepperle fired 3-over 75 to tie for 23rd. Margaret Shirley is tied for 31st after shooting 4-over 76, while Abigale Schepperle is tied for 50th after carding an 8-over 80. The Tigers will continue action Saturday morning at 9:20 a.m. Auburn will tee off of hole 10 with Arkansas and Vanderbilt. Tiger fans can follow second round action live action on www.golfstat.com.
