West Point, Miss. - The fifth-ranked Auburn women's golf team concluded the SEC Championship with an eighth place finish, firing a 14-over 302 on Sunday. The three-day championship was won by Georgia and was played at the par 72, 6,432-yard Old Waverly course in West Point, Miss.
"It was a tough tournament for us," Auburn head coach Kim Evans said. "We will go back to the drawing board and regroup. We have a talented group of student-athletes and if we could play in a tournament tomorrow we would. We are putting this one past us and getting ready for the remainder of post-season and are very much looking forward to it."
For the second day in a row Auburn carded a 14-over 302 and finished in eighth (298-302-302--902), improving one spot from yesterday. The Lady Bulldogs led from day one and never relinquished their lead, 285-291-289--865. Georgia's Taylor Leon was crowned SEC Champion, passing teammate Garrett Phillips, who led after the first two days. Leon carded a 5-under 67 to finish four strokes ahead of Phillips and Tennessee's Marci Turner.
Three Auburn individuals posted top-25 finishes in the 59-person field. Nicole Hage, playing for the final time at the SEC Tournament, tied for 21st after carding a 2-over 74 (75-75-74--224). Newcomers Marisa Milligan and Candace Schepperle tied for 25th. Milligan shot a 5-over 77 (72-78-77--227), while C. Schepperle fired a 7-over 79 (75-73-79--227).
Junior Margaret Shirley carded a third consecutive 4-over 76 to tie for 30th, while Abigale Schepperle shot a best round, 3-over 75 (80-78-75--233) to finish 42nd.
Auburn entered the SEC Tournament with a 39-11 advantage over the field. Prior to this tournament Auburn had not lost to South Carolina, Alabama or LSU this season. The Tigers are now 43-18 over the conference field and 125-31 overall this season.
The Tigers will resume play on May 10-12 at the NCAA Regional. The NCAA Selection committee will announce the regional selections on April 30 at 3 p.m. CT on www.ncaasports.com. The NCAA Championship will be held on May 22-25 at the LPGA International Course in Daytona Beach, Fla.
